Professor Olav Eikeland

Department of Learning and Philosophy

Traces of hê hodós – an internal but still neglected connection between learning and philosophy There are philosophies of both learning and education which mostly discuss philosophical aspects of learning or education as these subjects are presented through other, non-philosophical disciplines and approaches, just like there are philosophies of social science, biology, physics etc. But none of these other fields suggests that philosophy equals or replaces physics, biology etc. Philosophy IS not biology, physics, or sociology the way that philosophy IS learning. You cannot say “biology AS philosophy, or philosophy AS biology” but you can say “philosophy AS learning, or learning AS philosophy”. Why?

After the inaugural Department of Learning and Philosophy is hosting a reception also at Kroghstræde 3.
